Nissan to Focus On EVs, Will Pause Majority of New Gasoline Engine Development
Nissan will be stopping the development of internal combustion engines in all major markets except the United States. The Japanese automaker will instead focus on electric vehicles. This is monumental news for Nissan. Like many other automakers, Nissan has been making the shift toward EVs in an attempt to reduce carbon emissions and combat the global climate crisis. The automaker recently announced its plan to invest an estimated 17.59 billion into electrification efforts. Nissan is serious about its EV efforts and this recent news is confirmation. We’ve gotten a glimpse of one of Nissan’s EVs already, the all-electric Nissan Ariya, but for now, we’ll take a look at where the automaker is headed from here.
Nissan to Pause Combustion Engine DevelopmentÂ
Nissan will be stopping the development of internal combustion engines in all its major markets except for the U.S. The Japanese automaker will instead focus on electric vehicles. Nissan has already put some resources into EVs like the Nissan Ariya. This news further confirms the automaker’s path going forward. Nissan will still continue the limited development of gasoline engines in the US, mostly for pickups. The main focus, however, will be on EVs.Â
Along with ramping up its EV production, Nissan will also be building new battery recycling factories in the United States and Europe. The automaker hopes to finish these by 2025. With the state of the global climate, many automakers like Nissan have been aiming for more environmentally friendly vehicles like hybrids and EVs. Although these vehicles reduce carbon emissions, some concerns have risen. One of these is battery range which many consumers have stated is one of their main obstacles to getting an EV. The other issue is what to do with the batteries when they require maintenance or expire. Luckily, Nissan has been working through these issues.
We’ll have to stay posted about Nissan’s next efforts as the automaker refused to comment about its current endeavors. For now, it’s clear that EVs will be the main priority along with battery storage and recycling.Â
