Nissan Reveals Unique Ariya and Leaf Concepts at 2022 SEMA Show

Nissan recently revealed several concept vehicles at the 2022 Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) in Las Vegas. The SEMA show hosts manufacturers, distributors, and retailers annually to showcase new concept vehicles. Nissan unveiled exciting concepts like the Nissan Z GT4 and Nissan Off-Road Frontier. There were also EV concepts like the Nissan Ariya Surfwagon and Nissan Sunny Leaf. Like many other automakers, Nissan has been focused on its electrification efforts. The Japanese automaker introduced its all-new 2023 Nissan Ariya and updated the 2023 Leaf. The EV concepts showcased give more insight into the direction Nissan is headed with its EVs. We’ll take a look at the Ariya Surfwagon and Sunny Leaf and see what consumers can expect.

New Concepts: Nissan Ariya Surfwagon and Sunny Leaf

Nissan recently unveiled two electric concept vehicles at the 2022 Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) show in Las Vegas. The SEMA show is hosted annually and brings manufacturers, distributors, and retailers together to showcase new concept vehicles. Nissan revealed two electric concept vehicles, the Nissan Ariya Surfwagon and Nissan Sunny Leaf. Both are based on the respective Nissan Ariya and Nissan Leaf. Other concepts revealed included the Nissan Z GT4 racing car and an Off-Road Nissan Frontier pickup truck.

The first EV concept that was unveiled was the Nissan Ariya Surfwagon. Created by Nissan and Tommy Pike Customs, the electric crossover SUV features retro styling and wood panel-style wrapping. The Ariya Surfwagon presents a California-style surf design that inspires future Ariya owners. The unique vinyl wood wrapping, chrome trim, and 20-inch blue and white wheels let consumers know they can customize their EV however they want. The EV SUV also features a lowered suspension and a custom roof rack that can hold two 7-foot surfboards. 

As for the Nissan Sunny Leaf, this EV concept takes the classic 1987 Sunny pickup truck and revitalizes it. The pickup truck utilizes the 2023 Nissan Leaf powertrain, which features an electric motor with a 40-kWh lithium-ion battery pack. This provides the pickup with 147 horsepower and 236 lb-ft of torque, a drastic improvement to its original four-cylinder engine. The new electric motor also remains mated to the original 56A manual gearbox. Additional changes include:

• A front suspension conversion.
• Heavy-duty rear leaf springs.
• A custom driveshaft.
• An aluminum battery box.

For styling, the classic electric pickup gets a Hakosuka Skyline widebody kit with 17-inch Rotiform wheels and a custom user interface display. The Nissan Ariya Surfwagon and the Nissan Sunny Leaf demonstrate that EVs are just as versatile in design and scope as internal combustion engine vehicles.
