Nissan Plans Merger, Creates New Tuning Division

Nissan is hoping to capitalize off of the merging of two of its auto-tuning divisions. The Japanese automaker will be combining its in-house tuning division Nissan Motorsports International Co. (Nismo), and its other tuning division Autech. Nissan is hoping that this new merger will allow it to take advantage of both company’s successes. Nismo is recognized globally as a tuning division that specializes in extreme vehicles such as the Nissan GT-R. Autech, on the other hand, typically only tunes JDM-only Nissan models and GT500 class race cars like the Fairlady Z. Because of this, not many US-based consumers have heard of the secondary tuning division. Nissan is hoping to change all this, however.

Nissan to Merge Nismo and Autech

Nissan will be taking advantage of two of its tuning division’s successes. The Japanese automaker will be merging its Nismo tuning division with its Autech division. Both in-house tuning divisions are responsible for building some of the automaker’s most iconic cars. These range from extreme sports cars like the 2021 GT-R to the Nissan Z. Nissan is hoping that this merger will allow it to further capitalize on the global recognition of Nismo and the expertise of Autech. About the new merger, Autech and Nismo CEO Takao Katagiri said,

“Both Autech and Nismo have more than 30 years experience and have a solid and wide fan base. By connecting the high aspirations of our employees and advanced craftsmanship for the future, we aim to reach ever greater heights as a presence loved and supported by customers,” Takao Katagiri.

Nissan’s new tuning company will begin its operations starting April 1st, 2022. The new name will be Nissan Motorsports & Customizing Co. The two divisions, Nismo and Autech, have teamed up in the past. Together, they co-developed the 370Z Nismo. Nissan is hoping something similar can happen again. What that may be we’re not sure, but here’s hoping it’s a high-performance Nissan Z variant. Whatever direction Nissan takes, it’s certain that this new merger will allow the automaker to further improve and customize some of its iconic sports cars.
