Nissan Plans Intelligent Factory Roll Out in Japan and US
Nissan Motors recently announced its plan to invest more than $1.2 billion into upgrades for several of its plants over the next seven years. The plants receiving the upgrades will be two plants in Japan, Oppama and Kyushu, and two plants in the United States, Canton and Smyrna. This comes as part of Nissan’s new initiative, the Intelligent Factory Initiative. Nissan’s hope is that this new initiative will make their vehicle production more efficient by reducing waste and pollution. Attempts at lowering waste and curbing carbon emissions are what many automakers have been working toward as the global threat of climate change looms. Some have aimed at improving their production standards while others have attempted to persuade the general public to move toward electric vehicles. All efforts are warranted as the climate issue affects everyone around the world. Nissan is looking to transform its current production to better accommodate the future. We’ll have to see where Nissan goes from here, but this is a great first step toward saving the future of the planet.
Nissan’s Intelligent Factory Initiative
Nissan Motors is planning to invest more than $1.2 billion over the next seven years into its factories. The automaker will use the money to upgrade its production plants in both its Japan and US locations. The plants in Japan include the Oppama and Kyushu locations while the plants in the US include the Canton and Smyrna locations. The plants will receive new equipment to help increase efficiency and reduce pollution. About these new upgrades, Nissan’s executive vice-president Hideyuki Sakamoto said,
“Nissan has spent JPY33bn over the past two years installing advanced equipment at its plant in Tochigi Prefecture as part of its Intelligent Factory Initiative. The new technology will now be rolled out in all major plants in Japan and the US,” Executive Vice-president Hideyuki Sakamoto
Nissan’s Tochigi Prefecture was the first plant to receive new equipment. This equipment consisted of mixed reality headsets for training production workers, new facilities for electric vehicles, and additional automation for production lines. Alongside these new materials were new automated systems designed to help install electric and conventional powertrains. These automated systems will help measure car dimensions to better ensure assembly accuracy.
Nissan will also be installing sensors throughout their factories. These will warn of any problems while monitored cameras will transmit live streams to control rooms. In the case of an emergency, engineers will be dispatched with camera headsets and tablets with instructions from the control room staff. Nissan says this new system will help reduce equipment recovery time by 30%. Nissan is aiming to increase its production in a way that helps eliminate error and reduce waste. The company has stated its plans to reduce carbon emissions by 41% by 2030 by using renewable energy sources. More and more automakers are redesigning their systems to better navigate the climate crisis. If the general public can acclimate to electric vehicles, automakers globally will be able to focus on efficient vehicles that serve the public while preserving the environment.
