Nissan Plans For New EVs With Solid-State Batteries
Nissan is planning on bringing solid-state batteries to its EV lineup. The Japanese automaker has been expanding its EV lineup, adding the all-new Nissan Ariya most recently. As one of the first electric vehicle proponents, Nissan aims to further its electrification efforts and bring stronger and more capable EVs to the industry. While the Nissan Leaf offers versatility and affordability, the Nissan Ariya gives us a glimpse of what’s to come. Now Nissan is discussing solid-state batteries, which are set to increase charging speeds dramatically. We’ll take a look at Nissan’s current progress and see what consumers can expect from the powerful batteries.
Nissan Eyes Solid-State Batteries
Nissan is planning on introducing solid-state batteries to its EV lineup. The Japanese automaker aims to finish producing powerful batteries by 2028. While that may seem far away, Nissan is already in the process, hoping to have a pilot production plant up and running by 2025. After that, the automaker hopes to complete the design and production by 2026. If successful, Nissan will have a large advantage over competitors as EVs become more accepted into the mainstream automotive industry.
Solid-state batteries trump lithium-ion batteries for several reasons. For one, the batteries are smaller and more lightweight than lithium-ion batteries. This means they can be used in a variety of applications. They also deliver more energy and can be recharged much quicker, which means automakers can pursue more powerful EVs. Finally, solid-state batteries are safer than lithium because they do not have the liquid electrolyte component, which is highly flammable.
Nissan has stated that using solid-state batteries can triple its charging speeds up to 400 kW. They can also improve the energy output and thereby cut production costs. Currently, the issue in developing solid-state batteries is the production costs due to it being an emerging technology. Other issues involve the material itself, which can degrade the battery life after a number of uses. Thankfully Nissan is well aware of this and has its engineers working with scientists at the University of Oxford. For now, automakers will continue to use lithium-ion batteries. It’s only a matter of time before solid-state batteries become the go to and it seems Nissan is aiming to be the forerunner.
