Is There An All-Electric Nissan GT-R On the Way?
An all-electric Nissan GT-R may be on the way. According to the head of Nissan’s performance division, NISMO, a hybrid performance car, is currently in development. This news comes from Takao Katagiri, who stated that the Japanese automaker is considering a new hybrid sports car. We’re still determining whether it will be a G-TR, but the next-generation G-TR has been a long time coming. The Nissan GT-R NISMO is a powerful and versatile sports car. Nissan has made several improvements to the GT-R that have enhanced its performance. Aside from combustion engine vehicles, Nissan has also been working on electric vehicles like the all-new Nissan Ariya. Given how far Nissan has come from the Nissan Leaf, it wouldn’t be farfetched to consider that an all-electric sports car may be at the forefront. We’ll look at Katagiri’s comments and see whether an electric GT-R is a real possibility.Â
Will There Be An All-Electric GT-R?
Currently, the only available Nissan GT-R is the 2022 version. Nissan offers a Premium and NISMO version, with the Premium starting at an MSRP of $133,540 (plus destination fee) and the NISMO $210,7405 (plus destination fee). Both trims offer impressive performance and capability, but the NISMO steps it up, delivering 600 horsepower and 481 lb-ft of torque. The NISMO also features a 3.8L twin-turbo V6 engine fitted with the same turbochargers used on the Nissan GT-R GT3 race car. This allows drivers to enjoy a 0-60 mph time of just 2.8 seconds.
While the current Nissan GT-R is impressive, rumors have been speculating about an electric version. These rumors were given more fire thanks to the head of NISMO, Takao Katagiri. As the head of Nissan’s performance development division, Katagiri had this to say,Â
“There is a very, very important vision in Europe for Nissan. It’s around the heart of this new car,” said Katagiri. “This region is very, very special for us, especially for performance cars. So one thing I can say is please wait. We are going to introduce a very exciting model to the UK market under the Nismo brand.”
While Katagiri was not direct in his statement, he said that a hybrid performance car was developing. Given how far Nissan has come with its electrification efforts, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see the next iteration of the Nissan GT-R be a hybrid or all-electric model. The Japanese automaker recently released the Nissan Ariya, which offers impressive range, performance, and versatility. For now, we’ll stay tuned for what Nissan has in store, but whatever it is, it will likely be revealed within the next decade.
