Is Nissan Eyeing An Electric Pickup Truck?
With so many electric pickup trucks on the horizon, Nissan is looking to squeeze its way in on the fun. The Japanese automaker recently released the Nissan Ariya which proved that Nissan has the ability to produce a powerful and engaging electric vehicle. While the Nissan Leaf has served as the quintessential EV, times have changed. Although Nissan did update the 2023 Leaf with new styling, consumers are now looking toward more capable and versatile EVs that can compete with combustion engine vehicles. That’s where Nissan wants to be and after offering the Ariya, it seems the automaker is eyeing an electric truck.Â
Nissan Aims For Electric Mid-Size Pickup Truck
Nissan is aiming to bring an all-electric pickup truck to the market. After continued success with the Nissan Leaf and now the Nissan Ariya, the Japanese automaker has decided to move toward a mid-size electric truck. This is a good transition as the automaker has made great strides with its electrification process. As a way to improve this process, Nissan has been considering various ways to increase efficiency and function. Most recently, the automaker stated that it would be committing $17.6 billion over the next five years in order to improve its EV process. This aligns with Nissan’s goal to launch 23 new EVs by 2030.
Along with launching 20 electric vehicles, Nissan also hopes to reduce the cost of lithium-ion batteries by 65 percent. This aligns with their goal to introduce their own solid-state battery by 2029. The large focus on EVs and reducing carbon emissions is one that many automakers have taken on. At the UN Climate Summit in Glasgow, Scotland, many automakers pledged to phase out fossil fuel vehicles by 2040. While ambitious, automakers like Nissan have been working to meet that standard by offering hybrids and EVs.
The next electric vehicle to come from Nissan will likely be a fully electric pickup truck. The automaker’s current truck lineup has done well. Pickups like the Frontier and Titan have done exceptionally well in sales and owners are happy with the capability and versatility offered. With an EV truck, it would have to perform at the same level if not better as consumers have shown hesitancy when considering EV trucks. Thankfully automakers like Ford have demonstrated that EV trucks can perform well and even outperform combustion engine trucks. Nissan will have to consider these factors with its own EV truck, but given its record with the Ariya, it seems the automaker will have no trouble.
