A Moose Test is no Match for the Nissan Ariya
The upcoming all-electric Nissan Ariya is a key part of Nissan’s overall electrification plans. While very few have gotten the opportunity to get behind the wheel of the model, enthusiasm is building as it has quite a lot going in its favor. Not only does the Nissan Ariya feature a futuristic exterior design, its interior is also very modern and is a significant upgrade above the rest of Nissan’s lineup. Safety also seems to be where the Nissan Ariya shines as auto enthusiasts just put the model through the dreaded moose test, where the model passed with flying colors. What’s a moose test? It’s an evasive maneuver test where a car is driven at a specific speed and is tasked with avoiding a fictional moose to see how well the handling performs under duress.
The enthusiasts attempted the first moose test of the Nissan Ariya at a speed of almost 50 mph. While the electronic SUV performed surprisingly well, it did suffer from understeering and nabbed a cone on the first attempt. A second attempt followed, allowing the Nissan Ariya to navigate the test without hitting any cones without any under- or oversteering. Moose tests tend to make or break vehicles once enthusiasts get ahold of the results; it’s often considered an important factor when it comes to making a vehicle purchase.
Additionally, the enthusiasts put the Ariya through another rigorous test on a slalom course. To the surprise of no one, the electric SUV completed the course in just 25.5 seconds, either matching or outright beating some of the other electric competitors in its class.
2022 Nissan Ariya
The 2022 Nissan Ariya officially went on sale throughout the U.S. in the fall of 2022; it joins the existing Leaf hatchback as part of Nissan’s electrified vehicle offerings. Nissan offers two different battery sizes–63.0-kWh is standard, while a larger 87.0-kWh is an optional upgrade. When equipped with the larger battery, the Nissan Ariya features a range of up to 300 miles on a single charge. The Nissan Ariya has a starting MSRP of $44,485, placing it above the Leaf and other more affordable EVs, but directly under the base price of the highly-lauded Model Y from Tesla, giving the Ariya enough to jostle the competition.Â
Electric vehicles are all about range and the Ariya Venture+ offers drivers up to 304 miles on a single charge–a bright step up from the Leaf’s current limit at 226 all-electric miles. Buyers who opt for the base engine and battery trim (63.0-kWh) will be limited at 216 miles per charge. As for charging times, another poignant selling point of EVs, the Ariya will be capable of charging at home and on the road–even with advanced DC fast-charging ports. As of now, there aren’t any fuel economy figures available for the Ariya, but curious buyers can rest assured that the information will become available as the model launches.Â
